A Brick can be FUN…

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

We wanted to add a whimiscal element to a reception we did for Yahoo! a couple of days ago.

We had an idea, but knew we would need something pretty heavy so it wouldn’t float away…

So we decided to use a brick.  But we didn’t just want a regular brick.  It needed to add a little something to the event – even if it was just sitting on the floor.

So with some painters tape, 1 can of white spray paint and 1 can of purple spray paint…Alyssa (our lovely Summer intern) and I went to town…

Now you might be wondering what these bricks were going to be used for….

Remember to always add a little FUN to your events…even if some of the fun is on the floor. :)

Are you here for Hadoop?

1600 attendees, 70 volunteers, 36 sessions and 26 sponsors

Months of preparation led to a hugely successful event with record attendance last week in Santa Clara, CA for Yahoo!’s Hadoop Summit.  About 1600 people from different corporate companies came together for a one-day conference presented by Yahoo!.

Registration was crazy as you can imagine, but with over 70 volunteers – we made it happen.

We had a record number of sponsors – 26 – from major corporate companies like NetApp, MapR, IBM, and Dell who exhibited and networked.  The foyer areas and networking lounge were jam packed with attendees during the break.

General Session Staging

Throughout the day the attendees had the opportunity to listen to 36 sessions and keynotes about the Hadoop technology.

After a long day of networking and learning, the Hadoopers enjoyed a reception with specialty cocktails, great food, and pictures.  The reception featured a photo booth provided by Oh Snap! Photobooth.

The event this year took place at the Santa Clara Convention Center.  The Hyatt Santa Clara is connected to the center which proved very convenient ~ especially the Starbucks in the lobby!

When putting on a large scale event like this – you really need a top-notch team and we had that.

Overall it was a successful event and we can’t wait to start planning for next year!

One Tradeshow Booth + One Cocktail Reception + One Recovery Brunch = A Busy Week at the Internet Retailers Convention

Monday, July 11th, 2011

A couple of weeks ago we headed down to San Diego for a busy week full of events during the Internet Retailers Convention at the San Diego Convention Center.  We stayed at the Hotel Solamar which was just a few blocks away from the convention center.  The front desk staff is so friendly and the rooms were very spacious and comfortable.  (An added BONUS: You can request to have a gold fish in your room…I named him Jimmy.)

This is Jimmy!

Monday we oversaw the set-up of the Yahoo! Booth, making sure everything was going smoothly.

The Booth

Once the booth was set up, it was time to add the fun elements…which included all the Yahoo! freebies: mints, frisbees, pens, and candy.

You might wonder why we chose Frisbees…we’re in San Diego…it’s the beach…it’s fun!  Have you ever chosen a giveaway for a tradeshow based on a destination?  Or do you stick with the basics?

The booth was bustling with merchants and Yahoo’s.

Booth placement is key when it comes to tradeshows and being close to the entrance ensured great traffic.

Thursday night we had a party at Float at the Hard Rock Hotel.  Float is the outdoor pool bar at the Hard Rock.  Great venue, lots of seating, and a nice view.  One thing missing…the famous purple touches.  We had to make it look Yahoo!ish.

The last event after a whirlwind week was the Yahoo! recovery brunch.  Early Friday morning Yahoo! merchants came together to discuss we had a recovery brunch at the Hilton San Diego with breakfast and networking time.

Overall it was a great week at IRCE.
