Workout…Events…Do They Mix?

Meeting Planners…do you workout if you are working a program?

Attendees…do you workout if you are attending a program?

I have to say…it’s much easier being an attendee and getting your workout in.  Meeting Planners are up and ready to go by 6am sometimes and don’t get to bed before midnight.

So planners – what can you do to try and stay in shape while on the road?  I wish I had the perfect answer…but sad to say, I don’t.

I do have some tips though…that can keep you in shape and help relieve some onsite stress.

workout DVD’s
go outside for a walk
hit the gym
don’t take the elevator – run the stairs

Here are some of my favorite workout DVD’s…

No Excuse Workout

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Do you tell yourself excuses when traveling…I’m too busy to workout?  Or I’m too tied to workout?  I know I’ve done it before.

Managing events can be long and grueling hours.  You’re up early and you go to bed late at night.  Does this sound familiar?  I have to tell you – if you carve out some time – even just 30 minutes when all you do is focus on yourself vs. the 100 emails that are flying into your inbox…you feel so much better.  You even sleep better.

One thing I try to do when I travel is discover a new class to take.  As an example – when I was in NYC recently – I took a Physique 57 class.  I’m always up for doing something new – and it helps me discover the city I’m in a little bit more.

Well – FitSugar always has some great tips.  Today they posted a video that shows some great exercises to take on the road or you can do at your house.  I have to say that this is one of the better ones that I’ve seen.  Click this link to check it out.

Come on – get a little sweat on!  No more excuses!!

What’s In Your Travel Bag {for the gals}

Monday, February 1st, 2010

When you’re going on a trip – what do you bring?  One thing for sure – because I learned my lesson the hard way – an extra laptop power cord.  I was on the road and forgot my laptop power cord on the desk (actually still plugged into the wall).  Now I have 2.  One that stays in the backpack at all times and one that remains in the wall.  Here is a list of must haves (with the help from Smart Women Travelers) and a few that I’ve added.

Leaving on a Jet Plane…

  • Laptop (or iPad when they come out)
  • Power cord for everything (laptop, camera, cell phone, iPod, Kindle)
  • Wireless Card (mine is through Verizon)
  • Camera
  • FlipVideo (you never know what you’re gonna want to video)
  • iPod, fully charged
  • Noise-reducing headphones (I don’t have these – but might need to get some)
  • Magazines (always have the latest People, US, InStyle, Cooking Light, Travel & Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, or industry magazine)
  • Kindle, book or iPad when it comes out
  • Planner (I use my iPhone and a notebook)
  • Protein Bar (personal favorite is the Zone Bar in Chocolate/Peanut Butter)
  • Sunglasses (never leave home without them)
  • Birthday cards, thank you cards, other notes to write (great idea -  must do next time I travel)
  • Stamps
  • Cash
  • Misc (Kleenex, lip balm/lip gloss, gum, tea {I’m not a tea drinker – but you betcha I’ll have my Skinny Vanilla Latte with me})
  • Photocopy of drivers license and passport (another great idea – not to self…go make a copy now!)
  • Free drink coupons (if the airlines send them to me – I’m not a fan of drinking on planes – it just doesn’t taste that good…I’ll save those for the hubby.)
  • SmartWater (LOL – really any kind of water will do)
  • Painkillers (no not that kind…motrin or aleve)
  • Medicine (allergy medicine or any other thing you might be taking on a regular basis)

What’s in my suitcase…

  • Portable GPS (If I’m driving and don’t want to pay extra for GPS, I’ll throw it in the suit case.)
  • Running shoes
  • Workout clothes
  • Workout DVD’s (be it Tracy Anderson Method, Insanity, BarMethod, or Physique 57)
  • Exercise bands

Next time you’re leaving on a jet plane go through this check list to make sure you didn’t forget anything.

Before I go on a trip – I like to find a couple of restaurants that I want to go to.  I also like to find out about what kind of fitness there is.  When I was in NYC – I went to Physique 57 to check it out.  I had heard a lot about it so I went and took a class.  When I was in LA – I went to the Tracy Anderson Method in Studio City.  If you are traveling – why not check out what’s not available where you live.

What have you discovered in your travels?  Would love to hear.

Santa Clara Marriott

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

I’ve been at iPhone Dev Camp this weekend at the Yahoo! Campus. Love hanging out with my Yahoo! friends.  When ever I spend time with them – they always inspire me to do something with technology…they got me into twitter, facebook, blogging…and now I’m going to have an iPhone app written. I played around with the software and I have to say, I have such an appreciation for developers.

I stayed at the Santa Clara Marriott over the weekend and even though I was there just to sleep, it was very comfortable. The sleeping rooms have been recently renovated. The beds were great. Bathrooms were kinda small. I didn’t use the fitness center this time, instead worked out in my room – luckily there was an area to do that.  Sticking with my Insanity workout. (On a side note: I’ve been doing this workout for 2 weeks – it’s crazy…and awesome!)

Starbucks in the hotel was great. Watch out if the hotel wants to charge you parking. I didn’t pay for parking – it “came with the room.” There was also no one in the cashier booth – so I don’t think anyone pay for parking.  Note to self – when negotiating a contract with this hotel – parking…complimentary!!

I’ll post pictures of the hotel later.
