Are you here for Hadoop?

1600 attendees, 70 volunteers, 36 sessions and 26 sponsors

Months of preparation led to a hugely successful event with record attendance last week in Santa Clara, CA for Yahoo!’s Hadoop Summit.  About 1600 people from different corporate companies came together for a one-day conference presented by Yahoo!.

Registration was crazy as you can imagine, but with over 70 volunteers – we made it happen.

We had a record number of sponsors – 26 – from major corporate companies like NetApp, MapR, IBM, and Dell who exhibited and networked.  The foyer areas and networking lounge were jam packed with attendees during the break.

General Session Staging

Throughout the day the attendees had the opportunity to listen to 36 sessions and keynotes about the Hadoop technology.

After a long day of networking and learning, the Hadoopers enjoyed a reception with specialty cocktails, great food, and pictures.  The reception featured a photo booth provided by Oh Snap! Photobooth.

The event this year took place at the Santa Clara Convention Center.  The Hyatt Santa Clara is connected to the center which proved very convenient ~ especially the Starbucks in the lobby!

When putting on a large scale event like this – you really need a top-notch team and we had that.

Overall it was a successful event and we can’t wait to start planning for next year!

Their very first tradeshow…Cloud Computing @ Yahoo!

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

ROAR has been pretty crazy lately so I apologize for not updating the blog…

The Cloud Computing group at Yahoo! came to ROAR with plans of participating in their first ever tradeshow.  No booth…no experience…nothing.  Only the fact that they signed on as a platinum sponsor for a conference that also came with a 10×20 booth space.

Their main goals were to build awareness and to recruit amazing engineers.  No one really knew that Yahoo! was in the Cloud space.  After this show – and the talks that they signed up for – everyone knows now!!  Oh – they don’t have anything to show…

So what did ROAR do – we hit the ground running.  We worked with General Graphics to design the booth that would hit the mark…build awareness…create an experience…and get the Yahoo! name all over the show floor.  What better way to have the name all over – popcorn!!

The event was a huge success.  Take a look at these pictures…and welcome Cloud Computing @ Yahoo!…welcome to tradeshows.  Looking forward to many many more.

Amazing Press Coverage – Yahoo! Open Hack NYC

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

ROAR events group had the privilege to work on the Yahoo! Open Hack Day NYC event.  CNN just posted a great video about the event.  I hope that you enjoy it…

This was a crazy event that takes place over 24 hours.  We took over the Millennium Broadway Hotel in Times Square and the Hudson Theater.  The decor of the hotel went perfectly with the Steam Punk Theme.

To add to the branding – we had clings installed on the doors of the Hudson Theater.  There were 6 doors that we did this to.  Below is the Steam Punk Mannequin.

This was just a fun event to plan and I hope that you enjoy the pictures and the video. :)

Yahoo! Open Hack NYC Sneak Peak

Friday, October 9th, 2009

The big event is almost here.  Tomorrow 550 developers and hackers will be arriving at the Millennium Broadway Hotel in NYC for the Yahoo! Open Hack Day.  The day is going to start off with loads of sessions and then mid day – the hacking will begin.  Here are some shots of Gallery 8 – the venue for the Hack Event.  We were going for a “steam punk” look and feel.  Thanks to the creative wonders of Stephan Douris (YDN) and LDJ Productions – our vision has come to life.

Santa Clara Marriott

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

I’ve been at iPhone Dev Camp this weekend at the Yahoo! Campus. Love hanging out with my Yahoo! friends.  When ever I spend time with them – they always inspire me to do something with technology…they got me into twitter, facebook, blogging…and now I’m going to have an iPhone app written. I played around with the software and I have to say, I have such an appreciation for developers.

I stayed at the Santa Clara Marriott over the weekend and even though I was there just to sleep, it was very comfortable. The sleeping rooms have been recently renovated. The beds were great. Bathrooms were kinda small. I didn’t use the fitness center this time, instead worked out in my room – luckily there was an area to do that.  Sticking with my Insanity workout. (On a side note: I’ve been doing this workout for 2 weeks – it’s crazy…and awesome!)

Starbucks in the hotel was great. Watch out if the hotel wants to charge you parking. I didn’t pay for parking – it “came with the room.” There was also no one in the cashier booth – so I don’t think anyone pay for parking.  Note to self – when negotiating a contract with this hotel – parking…complimentary!!

I’ll post pictures of the hotel later.
